about me
I'm a Dominican writer-director based between the UK and the Caribbean, creating bold, emotionally resonant stories across fiction, documentary and branded content.
My work blends dark humour, emotional rawness and stylised visual storytelling, exploring themes of identity, migration, memory and feminine power. Drawing from backgrounds in performance, martial arts and experimental storytelling, I create films that move between psychological realism and surreal genre worlds.
My work has been presented at the London BFI, Latina Independent Film Festival and Festival de Huelva, and my feature project Mansa received the FONPROCINE 2024 development grant from the Dominican Republic Film Commission (DGCINE).
I am particularly drawn to stories that explore the intersection between personal mythology, contemporary culture and human connection.
what people are saying
“Yun Yun Yun is a collection of stories full of life, the tropics and a fast and colloquial language. Karlina tackles worldly issues generating reflections on childhood, loneliness, personal struggles and existence.”
— Nataly Rios-Goico
“With playful and rhythmic prose, Karlina Veras manages to transport us to a Caribbean full of fantasies. If Monterroso would have been born in the Dominican Republic, perhaps he would have written these stories.”
— Carlos Fonseca
“I love this book. It is perfect to share with family and / or read it together. You laugh, cry, and remind yourself of the simple things of everyday life - those little things that bring us joy.
